1. Who we are

Ank is a mobile application that helps school teachers mark handwritten answer sheets and create question papers. This policy explains what personal data the app handles and why.

Ank is built and operated by the team behind the app, reachable at support@ankapp.in. In this policy, “we” and “Ank” mean that team; “you” means the teacher using the app.

2. What we collect

Your teacher account

When you register, we store your name, email address, the board you teach, and the name of your school or institution. Your password is never stored in readable form — we keep only a bcrypt hash of it, which cannot be reversed back into your password.

What you upload

When you use the app to mark a test, we receive and store:

What the app produces

From the above, Ank generates and stores the text extracted from each page, the model answer and key points for each question, which of those points the student covered or missed, the mark proposed for each answer, the final mark you approved, and a record of any change you made between the two.

Technical data

We store a session token so you stay signed in, and — if you allow notifications — a device token so we can tell you when a batch has finished grading. We keep timestamps for when records were created and updated.

Ank has no advertising SDKs and no third-party analytics or tracking inside the app.

3. Student data, and who is responsible

This is the part that matters most, so it is worth stating plainly.

Ank does not choose which students’ work is uploaded. You do. When you photograph a class set and enter the students’ names, you — and the school you act for — are the party deciding that this data is collected and why. We act on your instruction, to run the service you asked for, and for nothing else.

That means your school is responsible for having whatever authority or consent is required before student work is uploaded, including any parental consent required for children under applicable law. We would encourage any school adopting Ank to check this against its own data protection obligations and, where relevant, the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 before a first batch is uploaded.

4. How we use it

We use the data above only to:

We do not sell or rent personal data, show advertising, build advertising profiles, or use student work to market anything to students or their families.

5. AI processing

Marking is done with AI. To extract the handwriting and evaluate an answer, the pages you upload and the question paper they are marked against are sent to our AI processing provider, which returns the extracted text and the proposed marks. That is the only purpose those pages are sent for.

An AI-proposed mark is a suggestion. It is not a result until you review and approve it, and the mark Ank records against a student is the one you approved. See the Terms of Service for what that means for your responsibility as the marker.

6. Who else sees it

No other teacher can see your uploads. Every script, batch, result and paper is scoped to the account that created it, and there is no feature in the app that exposes one teacher’s material to another. We access your data ourselves only when it is necessary to operate the service or to respond to a problem you have reported.

We rely on a small number of service providers to run Ank:

ProviderWhat it handles
AI processing providerReading handwriting and evaluating answers against the question paper
Hosting and database providerRunning the service and storing accounts, uploads and results
Push notification providerDelivering the alert when a batch finishes

We may also disclose data where we are legally required to. If that ever happens we will tell you, unless we are prohibited from doing so.

7. Storage and retention

Account details, uploads and results are stored on our servers and kept while your account is active, so that you can reopen a past batch or an old paper.

When a teacher account is deleted, the records that belong to it — uploaded answer sheet images, batches, student results, audit records and saved question papers — are deleted with it. You can ask us to delete a specific batch, or your whole account, at any time by writing to the address below.

8. Security

No system is perfectly secure. If a breach ever affects your data, we will notify you and the relevant authority as required by law.

9. Your rights

You can ask us to show you the personal data we hold about you, correct it, delete it, or stop processing it. You can withdraw consent for anything you previously agreed to, and you can complain to the relevant data protection authority.

To exercise any of these, write to support@ankapp.in. We will respond within a reasonable period and in any case within the timeframe the law requires.

Requests about a particular student’s data should come through the school or teacher who uploaded it, since they hold the context for whose work it is.

10. Children’s data

Ank is for teachers, not students. Nobody under 18 is intended to hold an Ank account.

The app nevertheless handles work produced by children, because that is what answer sheets are. We treat that material as sensitive: it is used only to produce the marks and feedback the teacher asked for, it is never used for advertising or profiling, and it is never used to track a child across services.

11. Changes to this policy

If we change this policy we will update the date at the top of this page, and we will tell you in the app before any significant change takes effect.

12. Contact

Questions, requests and complaints about privacy go to support@ankapp.in. That address is also our grievance contact for data protection matters, and it is read by the people who operate Ank rather than a support desk.

If you need a postal address or a named contact for a formal request, ask at that address and we will provide it.
