AI answer sheet checker: how it works, and where it needs you
Last updated: 23 October 2026
Answer sheet evaluation by AI means a computer reads the pages, compares each answer with what a full-mark answer should contain, and proposes a mark. It is a fast first pass. The decision stays with the teacher, and this page shows where that line sits in Ank.
The short version
- An AI answer sheet checker reads each page, compares every answer with a marking scheme, and proposes a mark with reasons. It is a first pass, not a final result.
- Ank builds one marking scheme per exam, lets you edit it, then grades every student against that same scheme.
- Every mark is a proposal until you approve the student. Ank keeps its proposed mark and your final mark side by side.
- We have not published an accuracy figure. Below is a way to test any tool, ours included, on your own scripts.
What an AI answer sheet checker actually does
It does three jobs that eat most of a marking evening:
- Read. It turns handwriting on each page into text and works out which answer belongs to which question.
- Compare. It checks each answer against what a full-mark answer must contain, point by point.
- Propose. It suggests a mark for each question and says why.
What it does not do is decide. A mark that nobody has looked at is not a result, and a tool that publishes one is a risk to you and to the student.
How Ank checks a class, step by step
- Confirm the question paper. Photograph the paper or upload the PDF. Ank pulls out the exam name, class, total marks, and every question with its marks, and you confirm them. The marks for each question come from the paper you confirmed, never from the AI.
- Review the marking scheme. For each question Ank drafts a model answer and up to five key points, the distinct things a full-mark answer must contain. You can edit them before any script is graded.
- Capture the scripts. Use the camera or the gallery, with several pages per student. Grading runs in the background, so you can close the app.
- Ank grades each student against the scheme. Every student is graded against the same scheme, so the standard does not drift between the first script and the fortieth. A proposed mark can never go above a question’s maximum. If it cannot find an answer to a question, it shows 0 with a note rather than dropping the question.
- You verify and approve. For each question you see the proposed mark, the key points covered and missed, and a note. Change any mark, then approve the student. Ank keeps its proposed mark alongside your final mark.
Where an AI checker needs your eyes
- Handwriting it cannot read. Ank is told to mark a word it genuinely cannot make out as [?] instead of guessing.
- Diagrams. Ank flags an answer that contains a diagram or sketch so you can judge it yourself.
- Correct answers your scheme did not expect. Marking works on key points, so an unusual but valid answer can lose marks. That is why you can edit the scheme before grading and any mark afterwards.
- Crossed-out work. Ank is told to ignore text the student clearly rejected and grade the final answer.
- Hindi and English. Answer sheets that mix both are credited in either language, and feedback can be written in Hindi. We have not measured accuracy separately for Hindi handwriting.
How accurate is it?
We have not published an accuracy figure, and we will not quote one we cannot back up. Accuracy depends on your handwriting samples, your subject and how clear your scheme is. The reliable way to judge any tool, including ours, is to test it on your own scripts:
- Pick ten scripts you have already marked, from weak to strong, including some with messy handwriting.
- Run them through the tool without looking at your own marks.
- Compare question by question, not just totals. Totals can match while individual errors cancel out.
- Find out why each difference happened: the scheme, the reading, or your own inconsistency. Sometimes it is the last one.
- Fix the scheme where differences cluster on one type of question, and run those scripts again.
Questions to ask any answer sheet checking tool
- Does a teacher approve every mark before it counts?
- Can you see why each mark was given?
- Is every student graded against the same scheme, and can you edit it?
- Can the tool give more marks than a question is worth?
- Does it show you what it could not read, or does it guess?
- Who can see the scripts, and where are they processed?
What happens to the scripts
Scripts you upload are tied to your account, and no other teacher on Ank can open them. The pages are sent to an AI provider to be read and graded, and for nothing else. The privacy policy covers this in full, including how to ask for deletion.
Questions teachers ask
Can AI check handwritten answer sheets?
Which boards and classes does it cover?
Does it need an internet connection?
Is it free?
Can it replace the teacher?
